Working notes from the people who file the applications — what the rules actually say, what they cost, and where founders lose time. Written against the authorities, not against a brochure.

Briefings on Free zones

24 pieces Clear filter
  1. Free zones Man at a counter hands a key and framed certificate across a railing to a woman holding a laptop

A free zone can license your company. It cannot protect anything your company made.

Free zone marketing lists intellectual property protection among the reasons to set up here, as though the zone supplied it. It does not.
  2. Free zones Woman lifts a sheet printed with a UAE map outline from one of five tall file stacks

Sixteen free zone benefits are advertised in this market. Sorted by where each one actually comes from, four are the zone’s.

The standard free zone benefits list has barely changed since 2010, and the country changed underneath it.
  3. Free zones Woman moves a small building model across a lit divide toward a cluster of gold towers, stamps beside

A free zone company can now move to the mainland — but only if both authorities agree

A company can now transfer from a free zone to an emirate's mainland authority, or back, and keep its legal personality.
  4. Free zones Woman compares two open brochures over a lit tower model and a row of small unit models

UAE free zones split into sector clusters and licence shops. They are not competing on the same thing, and comparing their prices compares nothing.

The standard free zone recital — diverse industries, skilled workforce, purpose-built infrastructure, an ecosystem for your sector.
  5. Free zones Woman holds a printed filing while a man reads a laptop profile, a figure with binoculars outside

A free zone hides your ownership from your competitors, and from nobody else

Confidentiality sits near the bottom of every free zone benefits list, and it is the line people are least willing to ask about directly.
  6. Free zones Woman behind a lit model of a waterfront district, engraved tags hanging over stacked paper beneath it

The Fastest-Growing Free Zone Is the Worst Reason to Choose One

Zones publish growth because growth is the number they can publish.
  7. Free zones A man in a kandura at a desk with an open certificate folder, a neighbouring office lit beyond the glass

The company next door is the only UAE customer your free zone licence already reaches

Every free zone sells the same asset alongside the licence: thousands of companies inside the fence, described as an ecosystem, a network, a community of potential partners.
  8. Free zones Woman looks up from an open notebook sketched with a light bulb and buildings, keys and papers beside her

Nothing inside a free zone is an opportunity. The zone sells permission; the idea has to arrive from outside the fence.

People search for business opportunities in free zones the way they would search for a shop to buy, and the zones answer in a vocabulary built for someone who has already chosen.
  9. Free zones Woman in an abaya watches a hand stamp a report marked with a red cross, lit Gulf map below

Saudi Arabia does not recognise a free zone invoice, and that is the market your Dubai licence was sold to reach

Every free zone brochure sells proximity: a bridge between Europe, Asia and Africa, a regional base, three continents inside a short flight. Proximity is real and it is not what a customs officer measures.
  10. Free zones Standing man in a kandura points out four architectural scale models to a seated woman in an abaya

Pick the Dubai free zone you can afford to be wrong about, because moving out is not yours to decide alone

Every zone comparison you are sent prices year one.
  11. Free zones Hand offering a tray holding keys and a coin to a seated woman, stacked files beside her

A free zone sells permission. Opportunity is a claim about demand, and the two are decided in different places.

The list you were shown answers a different question. Every published list of free zone opportunities is a list of activities a zone will license. That is a statement about permission.
  12. Free zones Woman traces a stylus over a lit world map inlaid in the desk, lines converging on a skyline model

A free zone licence reaches no further abroad than a mainland one. What it changes is the UAE half of the map.

Reach abroad is the argument most often used to close a free zone sale, and it is the one claim on which a free zone licence and a mainland licence are almost identical.
  13. Free zones Woman at a counter shows a document struck through with a red cross to a man holding a UAE passport

A free zone file is refused on the state of a document, not on the list of them

The document lists UAE free zones publish are short, and almost nobody fails them on content.
  14. Free zones Woman in hijab studies three stone caskets, two padlocked and one open showing a gilded chart emblem

Two of the three advantages free zones were invented to grant have been federalised away. The one still in their gift is the sector mandate.

A free zone is not a discount counter.
  15. Free zones Woman holding a tablet touches one of several lit pins on an illuminated coastal city model

Your sector does not have forty free zones to choose from. Count the real addresses first, because the count decides whether price is a lever at all.

Every free zone comparison starts with a fee table, which assumes the zones on it are alternatives. For most sectors they are not.
  16. Free zones Woman with a tablet points at a domed palace model on a gold-veined table as a colleague watches

Choosing Abu Dhabi is choosing which institutions hold your files. ADGM, the mainland and KEZAD hand them to three different sets.

The page this one replaces described Dubai under an Abu Dhabi heading and claimed a tax exemption that had already been legislated away. Both corrections matter.
  17. Free zones Queue of people holding icon-marked cards at a counter as a receptionist hands one across

The free zone benefits list is written for five different buyers, and none of them collects more than a third of it

Every zone publishes the same benefits list, and the list never says which items apply to you.
  18. Free zones Woman seated between two circular city models with brass balance scales and keys on the desk

Free zone or mainland is one question about your customer, and the ownership rule everybody still cites was repealed in 2020

Both are UAE companies under UAE law; the words name which authority licenses you and which market you may sell to directly.
  19. Free zones Man points a pen at a glass model of a fitted office while a colleague watches

At Dubai Silicon Oasis the licence fee is a component, and the floor area you lease is the price

The advertised annual licence at DSO and the amount that leaves your account in year one are different numbers for a structural reason.
  20. Free zones Woman in a hijab presents a stack of five icon-marked tiers to a man seated across the counter

A free zone setup is not six counters like the mainland. It is one authority wearing five hats, and that is both the whole sequence and the whole risk.

On the Dubai mainland a formation passes through an economic department, a notary, a landlord, a recording system, a chamber and two immigration bodies.
  21. Free zones Woman in a hijab turns a bound document toward a seated man between two lit glass panels of icons

RAKEZ is two jurisdictions sharing one licence desk, and the cheaper side cannot sell to the UAE

RAKEZ licenses on both sides of the free zone boundary, and the side you land on decides which licence categories exist for you, who you may invoice, and how many licences you carry.
  22. Free zones Woman in a hijab points along lit unit models toward a gateway arch, port cranes through the window

A Jafza setup is a chain of gates in a fixed order, and the decisions that cost the most are all taken before the first form

Every step in a Jafza setup is gated by the one before it, and the two decisions that cost the most — the licence tier and the premises — are taken before any form is submitted.
  23. Free zones Consultant pointing a pen along a row of desk models as a client in a kandura listens

An authorised channel partner is paid by the free zone, which makes the badge a fact about the advice rather than a verdict on the firm

Every second business setup firm in this market advertises an authorised channel partner appointment, and almost none of them says in the same paragraph who pays for it.
  24. Free zones Woman in an abaya lays a sheet on four stacks marked with crosses, a fifth marked with a tick

Nobody can rank Dubai’s free zones, because most of them will not license your activity at all. Four eliminations do the work a ranking cannot.

Thirteen free zones operate inside Dubai and six more sit within an hour of it, and a ranked list of ten implies they compete for the same company. They do not.
